Reconstruction of large complex abdominal wall defect with components separation and innervated muscle flaps

Reconstruction of large abdominal wall defects provides unique challenges to the plastic surgeon. Components separation as had become a hallmark of reconstructive options for abdominal wall defects in recent years by both plastics surgeons and general surgeons. Reconstruction with innervated free flaps has been described and allows for true functional replacement of “like with like.” The authors present a case series where both techniques were necessary to be combined for successful functional outcomes in secondary abdominal wall reconstructions.
