Comparing the Differences in Facial Contour Improvement between Bone Reduction and Orthognathic Surgery

Common facial bone surgeries include bone reduction and orthognathic surgery (OGS), both significantly altering facial contours. In bone reduction, the focus is on the cheekbones and lower jaw. This involves cutting bone to achieve a narrowing effect, primarily impacting the periphery of the face. OGS, targeting the upper and lower jaws, changes facial contours by adjusting bone positions. This alteration involves both the periphery and central face, allowing for changes to not only narrowing, but also widening or enlarging the face. Often performed with orthodontics, OGS addresses both bite and facial shape concerns. Consequently, most people believe that only patients with malocclusion require OGS. In fact, for patients with a normal bite, OGS is also an option for adjusting facial contours, with indications completely different from bone reduction. Understanding the differences in the effects and indications of OGS and bone reduction surgeries allows for providing the best suitable improvement plan according to each patient's unique conditions.
