Title: Use of irradiated homologous costal cartilage for nasal tip support in rhinoplasty
Author: Hung-Wei Yang, Sung-Yuan Chang, Wen-Sun Tseng
Objective:
Irradiated homologous costal cartilage (IHCC) has been widely used as an alternative to autologous cartilage in structure rhinoplasty. In this study we present a new technique combining homologous costal cartilage with autologous cartilage in septal reconstruction.
Methods:
Our technique included a hybrid use of homologous costal cartilage and septal cartilage as spreader graft and caudal septal extension graft for nasal tip support.
Results:
No patients experienced severe nasal deformities caused by infection-related absorption. There was no graft warping, nor any noticeable noninfective absorption.
Conclusions:
Irradiated homologous costal cartilage is reliable for septal reconstruction for patients who require ample graft material, who do not want a donor site scar and older patients that may have extensive ossification of costal cartilage.
