  • 3D printing assisted cranial facial skeleton contouring surgery

The well-established facial skeleton contouring surgeries are routine procedures nowadays. However, how to achieve the symmetric contour and reducing operation time, especially in complicated cases may always be the problem.
To overcome this kind of problem, we provided methods by using three-dimensional (3D) printed molds, cutting guides, and simulated images to make the procedures of facial skeleton contouring surgeries more efficient and accurate. The operations were virtually planned by MIMICS software (V17, Materialize, Belgium), which optimized the stable structure and symmetry contour. We also printed 1:1 facial skeleton and shaped the implant preoperatively on them. We have performed miscellaneous facial skeleton contouring surgeries such as mandible reduction, chin augmentation, forehead augmentation and occipital augmentation by the assistance of Computer-Aided Design (CAD) and 3D printing.
3D printing assistance for facial skeleton contouring provides a significant improvement, regarding the aesthetic and functional outcome. Planned implantation and cutting guides achieve more symmetric contour, thus improving the appearance.
