  • Application of FLIR smartphone in plastic and reconstructive surgery – A preliminary research

    Objective:
Forward-looking infrared (FLIR) thermography can capture and assess any hot spots or temperature changes as image or video. The skin or tissue temperature may indicate tissue perfusion, circulation, or vascularity. The aim of this report was to introduce the clinical application of thermal imaging in plastic and reconstructive surgery.
    Material and Methods:
Total 30 patients were assessed using thermal imaging smartphone (FLIR Lepton 3.5) with MyFLIR Pro App by one operator between Oct 2020 and Oct 2022.
    Results:
16 cases were used for free flap monitoring and 6 of them were also used for mapping. 7 cases were used for local or regional flap design and monitoring. 2 cases were used for replanted finger monitoring. 2 cases were used for traumatic open wounds evaluation. 1 case was use for burn wound assessment. 1 case was used for evaluation of peripheral arterial occlusive disease. 1 case was used for cellulitis. Most of the cases were compatible with clinical judgement.
    Conclusions:
Thermal imaging smartphone is an objective, non-invasive, real-time, time-saving, user-friendly, and low-cost tool for plastic surgeon.
