  • How to Create an Inspiring and Frontier's Research Paper --- My 30+ Year Experience

Introduction: There were four international peripheral nerve reconstructive surgeons inspiring me as a peripheral nerve microsurgeon, including Dr. J Terzis (U.S.A.), Dr. H Millesi (Austria), Dr. A. Narakas (Switzerland), and Dr. T Kondo (Japan). I completed my fellowship training in 1988 and I started my research investigation since 1989. Since then, I have medical research program (MRP) every year till now. I become a world recognized expert in reconstructive microsurgery. Research is one of important keys (or successful factors) to be an expert.
Materials: Till now, I have had 36 MRPs in the past and present: two were clinical research and the others (34, 94%) were experimental research. Experimental animals involved were most (32, 94%)with rats, only two with rabbits. The research grants were most from NMRP (科技部, 21, 58%); some from CMRP (長庚医院, 14, 39%), and one from ITRI (工研院, 3%). I classified my series of MRP into six categories: 1. a study for some purposes (to evidence a truth or a phenomenon, to support the clinical finding, or to evaluate the possibility); 2. a study for potential possibility (from bench to bed); 3. a study with uncertainty, 4. a study with debates; 5. a study with benefit: risk problem, and 6. a study with morals.
Results: Twenty-one studies (58%) have been published or accepted for publication in different journals, domestic and international. Some studies with uncertainty were not delivered, and some studies were rejected. I will explain each category with example(s) to show result from each study and what I learned from each study.
Conclusion: The motivation of my most research comes from clinical observation.
Subjects for MRP were focused on subjects with no general consensus, subjects with many questions but few answers, and subjects with many debates but few conclusions. Experimental research can support or enhance my clinical evidence and confidence. Research makes me more understand the nerve pathophysiology. Research can demonstrate or show or to prove something, even to create something and upgrade to translation medicine. It is full of fun. People likes to say “No publication, No Credit. Treat or trick”. I would like to say “No research, No credit. No way to become an expert”.
