  • Evaluation between the Perception of Appearance and Social Acceptance in Early Adolescent children

    Objective
By using 3-Dimensional images technique, this study aimed to recognize the difference in the perceptional of patients with cleft lip and palate between schoolchildren and children with cleft lip and palate. Moreover, to understand the degree of awareness and acceptance of children with craniofacial abnormalities from peers in social contract after surgery.

    Method
This prospective study used 3-Dimensional images faces of 20 early adolescent patients with cleft lip and palate and 5 normal children for inspection by 91 children (41children with cleft and palate and 50 normal schoolchildren), allowing these two groups to evaluate the appearance and respond to the 4 questions questionnaire which contain perceptions of facial appearance and social acceptance of the children with craniofacial abnormalities on the Likert scale of 1 to 5. Data were presented through bar-graph and analyzation of Item Response Theory-Graded Response Model to estimate the latent capability (θ) of each subject. The reliability of questionnaire was analyzed through Cronbach’s alpha test.

    Result
The results of this study showed that all subjects can distinguish cleft lip and palate from normal children through 3-Dimensional images, and the distinguish ability of normal children is significantly better than that of cleft lip and palate children. Comparison of latent capability (θ) of awareness and acceptance between two groups showed no significant differences. Additionally, questionnaire’s Cronbach’s alpha of the children with cleft lip and palate in this questionnaire all exceeded 0.85, which showed high consistency and reliability of the questions.

    Conclusion
Despite craniofacial deformities, this study showed that appearance through 3-Dimensional image may not have much impact on the social interaction of children with cleft lip and palate at this age.
