  • Current Surgical Management for Cancer-related Extremity Lymphedema in Kameda Lymphedema Center

    Abstract:
Lymphedema of the extremities is a chronic, debilitating disease. The more severe it becomes,
the harder it becomes to treat. Secondary lymphedema related to mainly breast cancer and gynecologic cancer are progressive in nature, and its treatment is challenging.
The mainstay of secondary lymphedema is conservative therapy including skin care, manual
lymph drainage, bandage, sleeve and gloves and exercise. On the other hand, surgical
treatment for lymphedema should be considered for the case which shows refractory to
    conservative therapy and rapid progression.
There are three surgical options for cancer-related extremity lymphedema, ①Lymphaticovenular anastomosis (Supermicrosurgery), ②Vascularized Lymph node/vessel
transfer (Microsurgery) and ③Debulking–liposuction (Macrosurgery). We select or combine these procedures depending on condition and severity of lymphedema.
I present current surgical management to bring out the maximum effect for lymphedema in our center.
