  • Robotic Breast Surgery- Gimmick or the Future?

Purpose: Robotic surgery or robotically-assisted surgery has become popular because it can be done with precision, miniaturization, smaller incisions, avoiding physiological tremors, decreased blood loss, less pain and quicker healing time. Robotic surgery already applied in many fields including prostatectomy, gynecology, cardiovascular surgery…etc. Its application in breast surgery is still developing.
Materials and Methods: Since March 2018, we had performed 12 robotic breast surgery in 7 patients. Four major types breast surgery were applied including gynecomastia resection(6), mastectomy for breast cancer or siliconoma and immediate reconstruction(4), delayed breast reconstruction(1) and breast augmentation(1). All procedures were done with single-port axillary access before robot docking and instrument positioning.
Results: The averaged operation time for one robotic breast surgery was 4 hours. No major complications and patients were satisfied with the results. The results will be reported and discussed in this oral presentation.
Conclusion: Although robotic breast surgery provides some benefits, it takes a longer preparation and machine set-up time. It also needs a longer learning curve and longer operation time compared with the traditional operation or endoscopic surgery. The high cost is another drawback for robotic surgery.
