    Commercializing a Basic Science Discovery
The gap between discovering something in the lab and bringing it to the patient’s bedside has been called “the valley of death.” It refers to the sometimes decades-long wait and the billions of dollars it takes to commercialize a new drug. We made what we thought was a useful basic science discovery almost ten years ago – a gene therapy to strengthen tendon repairs. The process of testing this new drug in patients and recouping the costs of development is an ongoing process, and one that many academicians never attempt due to the hurdles in place. This talk will outline the process of bringing a new discovery to market, including some thoughts on valuation of a new therapy.
