  • Beginning with the end in mind - Learnings from establishing the Australian Breast Device Registry

The Australian Breast Device Registry is a government funded, national, clinical quality registry which collects data on patients receiving breast device surgery in Australia, for aesthetic or reconstructive purposes. After a successful pilot project, the registry has progressed to an exemplar breast device registry, with over 50,000 patients enrolled and data on over 100,000 devices, with ongoing collection of Patient Reported Outcome Measures. The registry's main purpose is to track the long-term safety and performance of implantable breast devices. The registry minimum dataset was made available at no cost through the International Collaboration of Breast Registry Activities (ICOBRA), and has been adopted by a number of countries, which are working together to establish international post-market surveillance of breast devices. Learnings from the Australian experience will be discussed.
