  • Plastic surgical training "with emotions": a one-year sociological observation in Taipei

    Purpose:
Surgical teams, have been the subject of sociological research for many years, including their professional and interdisciplinary characteristic. Surgical residency is relatively explored late, because of their complexity and long-term process. This field study focused on the "emotional" aspect of plastic surgical (PS) training in a medical center in Taipei.

    Materials and Methods:
This research concern here is not with scientific knowledge construction, nor is it attempting to introduce the discursive practices employed by scientists and students. Rather, the focus of the research is interested in professionalization as configuring the task of training PS residency on a daily basis.
    Results:
PS is the youngest surgical discipline, and is always strongly under the influence of social value. South Korea aroused some studies since 2016, for example, the so-called "Gangnam-Style" PS. Our study also discusses the recent change in the society and the medical environment in Taiwan.

    Conclusions:
The results showed that the residency training expected personality traits, including friendly, communicative and trustworthy, to promote cooperation. The residency shall learn and accumulate the experience by clinical work to promote efficiency of doctor-patient communication. Traditional residency training is still irreplaceable. The research also found that residency are tired of the future and lose their growth momentum because the aesthetic medicine market devalues the training of residency. Therefore, residency have developed a new interpersonal model that emphasizes self-mockery and does not talk about dreams to accept pressure.
