Background
Amniotic band syndrome( ABS),or Congenital constriction ring syndrome (CCRS) is a congenital anomaly with a wide spectrum of clinical presentation. The accepted method of correcting a circular constriction is to excise the deep part of the constriction and repair with multiple Z- or W-plasties. Specific correction of the subdermal soft tissue part is recommended concurrently, to better correct the “sandglass” deformity. Here we present the long term results of major limb reconstruction, using single or double triangular flaps, with or without advancement, to correct the deformity in patients with constriction rings at either the upper or lower limbs.
Materials and Results
From 1992 to 2019, a total of 20 patients with constriction rings at major limbs were encountered. Among these, six patients underwent VY advancement or triangular flap reconstruction. Others were operated using Z-plasties or W-plasties. The follow-up period range from 6 month to 22 years. The results showed that with meticulous techniques and long-term follow-up, satisfactory results can be achieved with these methods, although some differences were noted.
Comments
We feel that the VY/Triangular flaps performed at either proximal or distal to the constriction rings are able to correct the contour deformity of the limbs with great versatility and acceptable aesthetic results.
