Objectives:
Breast cancer is the most common cancer of female in Taiwan with leading cause of cancer death. Surgery is the most recommended treatment. Breast conserving surgery (BCS) had proved to have similar prognosis to simple mastectomy when combined adequate adjuvant radiation therapy. However, in some cases, BCS may cause more significant deformity, interfere patient’s psychosocial well-being. Oncoplastic breast surgery (OBS) seems to be the option of treatment in these cases. This study aims to find out the outcomes between OBS and BCS no matter clinically, aesthetic outcomes subjectively or objectively.
Materials and Methods:
From 2015-2020, 80 patients received OBS at our hospital, in which, 33 patients proved to be malignancy with complete treatment were enrolled. With 1:3 matched ratios, 99 patients were enrolled in BCS group. Clinical outcomes were assessed. BREAST-Q questionnaire was then given 6 months after completion of treatment for subjective aesthetic outcome analysis. BCCT.core as objective outcome analysed the peri-operative photographs.
Results:
Due to matching, no demographic difference between two groups. When comparing the clinical outcomes, there were no significance over local recurrence rate, overall survival rate, positive margin rate, re-wide excision rate, convert to mastectomy rate or complication rate (Major / Minor). However, OBS group showed higher scores in satisfaction in breast. Also, objective outcome showed similar to better post-operation breast in OBS group.
Conclusion:
Oncoplastic breast surgery seems to be a safe and feasible surgery in treating breast cancer patients since clinical outcomes were compatible with breast conserving surgery. Also OBS group had better patient-reported outcome in breast satisfaction.
