  • Pros and Cons of Indocyanine Green Navigation in Malignant Melanoma Sentinel Lymph Node Biopsy

    Objective:
For malignant melanoma, new techniques and data on sentinel lymph nodes biopsy have become available and the cancer staging system has been modernized. Indocyanine green (ICG) navigation has demonstrated utility in lymph nodes identification and we aimed to analyze the benefits and disadvantages of its clinical application.

    Material and Methods:
A retrospective review of 14 lower extremity melanoma patients who underwent sentinel lymph node biopsy with ICG navigation system was concluded, and we compared our data with previous literature review along with summarizing our clinical experience.

    Results:
Fluorescence imaging with the real-time camera during malignant melanoma sentinel lymph node biopsy showed acceptable localization rate with limited complications. However, there is still some disadvantages found in our experience.

    Conclusions:
Indocyanine green (ICG) navigation system has shown its advantages in sentinel lymph node biopsy in malignant melanoma with higher sensitivity and specificity. Future improvement of this technique is needed for better clinical usage.
